Who watched the Watchmen this week? I did! And it was awesome!

Alan Moore’s revolutionary 1986-87 comic book, illustrated by Dave Gibbons, has frequently been called unfilmable. Hollywood has tried and failed numerous times throughout the years to capture this outstanding and ingenious work, and Moore’s disgust with previous adaptations of his books (V for Vendetta, League of Extraordinary Gentlemen) induced him to refuse any writing credit for this film and vow he’d never see it. The book’s intricate and labyrinthine structure, fully realized back-stories and breathtaking visual transitions between plots certainly do seem impossible to adapt to the silver screen. But goddammit, Zack Snyder tried, didn’t he? This is a man who loves the source material. He loves it the way we love it. And it shows.

I was in sixth grade the first time I saw Bernard Rose’s exceptional 1992 film Candyman.

It scared the living shit out of me. I was at my friend Hayley’s house, trying to fall asleep in her bedroom, which suddenly seemed absolutely beset with mirrors.  I remember telling myself, “You’ll never be able to sleep if you don’t prove it’s not real.” So I walked into the bathroom, closed the door behind me, turned off the lights and said “Candyman” five times in the mirror.

I cannot fucking believe I did that.

Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li

In the interest of full disclosure, the above grade is based on actual film quality—and that’s being rather generous. If I were to grade this movie based on my level of enjoyment while watching it, it would earn a solid B+. I had a serious amount of fun with this tender little asstard of a film. Granted, I know very little about Street Fighter. I’ve always been one of those annoying button pushers who would sometimes beat you serious gamers—without any strategy whatsoever—simply with the speed and dexterity of my little fingers. I’ve certainly never memorized any special moves or back stories to these characters, and I have no real stake in this franchise. So I am here to further annoy the serious gamers among you by giving some major kudos to this motion picture that was a complete and utter abortion of your all-time favorite fighting game. Sorry!

OMG! Really?! Even the most desolate scope of possibility alluded to in this article made my heart swell with glee.
