Extra! Extra! Burglars rot in hell for all eternity!

Due to the fact that I was totes burgled yesterday, I’m reserving the right to spend my lunch break reading a good book and eating pizza instead of blogging as I usually do. Here are two items in the meantime!

the avengers

Joss talks about the cancellation of Dollhouse, his kick-ass Astonishing X-Men comics series and his rewarding foray into filming The Avengers!

super

Director James Gunn gives us a sneak peek at his hotly-anticipated-by-me superhero spoof Super, starring Rainn Wilson, Ellen Page and (!!!) Nathan Fillion. Read my review of Gunn’s (A+!) Slither here. Continue reading

You may think this grade is a wild overestimation. After all, in earning an A+ on this blog, Piranha 3D is in the company of such gruesome cinematic feats as Candyman and Hellraiser. But for what it is—an uproarious, 88 minute schlockfest drenched in gore and teeming with glorious, fully dimensional nudity—Piranha 3D is FLAWLESS!

piranha

Holy shit, you guys! I LOVE THIS MOVIE SO CRAZY MUCH! After reading several fantastic reviews and hearing some bordering-on-sacrilege praise from my friends, my expectations were outrageously high. Mr. Marla kept warning me: “Don’t build it up too much!” but I couldn’t help myself. I built that shit HIGH, my friends. ALL THE WAY UP. And I STILL wasn’t prepared for the utter transcendence that was this movie. Continue reading

Extra! Extra! Marla's face to melt in tragic explosion of awesomeness tonight!

YES! That’s right! I’m seeing Piranha 3D this very evening and I’m CRAZY! EXCITED! Reviews are crazy good, box office numbers are decent and a sequel’s already in the works!

x-men first classJanuary Jones

Loads of casting news for Matthew Vaughn’s X-Men: First Class here, including the news that Mad Men‘s January Jones will play the ultimate ice queen and forever Marla girl crush Emma Frost. Jones certainly has the right look, but I’m not convinced she can actually act. Maybe there’s more than petulant Betty to Jones’s repertoire. I hope so, because I REALLY don’t want this movie to screw up Emma Frost. Read my review of Vaughn’s Kick-Ass here.

Extra! Extra! Moody chick from new Nightmare pulls casting coup of the century!

Yep, despite the terrifying rumor that Scarlett Johansson would be the outrageously inappropriate choice for Lisbeth Salander in the American remake of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, the far more fitting-in-appearance Rooney Mara has nabbed the covetous role. Although I was rather underwhelmed with her performance in the recent update of Nightmare on Elm Street, I’m willing to suspend judgment. For now.

smallville

I’ve just posted LOADS of Smallville S10 scoop to Watchtower including news on some very exciting return characters!

the avengers

Joss Whedon gives a very newsy interview about what to expect from The Avengers! The answer: amazingness, obviously!

Each generation loves nothing more than to revel in the nostalgia of their collective childhood experiences. As time passes, the negative aspects fade and what remains is a mythologized patchwork of rosy memories and optimistic historical events. For the baby-boomers, this translates into the narrative of perfect, happy, family-centric post-war America where the men were men and the women were ornamental that fuels so much of the Andy-Rooney-ish kvetching about the current state of affairs.

"Guhrrrr"

For my generation, born into culturally-relativist-post-post-war TV Land, this nostalgia translates into the current trend of pro-unicorn, 8-bit-loving, three-wolves-howling, super-hero-horny, i-love-the-80s, pop-up-video memedom. And it is this fuel that propels the pitch-perfect Scott Pilgrim vs. the World through its hour and fifty-two minutes of awesomeness. Continue reading

Extra! Extra! News and Stuff and Things!

Welcome to News Day Tuesday! Hot off the presses, from their blogs to my blog to you!
piranha

Eli Roth talks about the 3D technology for Piranha. We’ll see if it lives up to the eyeball-melting visuals of Step Up 3D! I have no doubt that it will live up to the story, in that it will not have one.

i spit on your grave

You can see the trailer for the remake of I Spit On Your Grave here. Yeah, it looks pretty cool, but mostly I’m excited about seeing if it holds up in Remake v. Original. Okay, I’m also excited that it’s pulled a no-rating for a theatrical release.

zombieland poster

Zombieland director Ruben Fleischer has a secret genre project in the works! That sounds so exciting! Read my review of Zombieland here.   Continue reading

Extra! Extra! Super Short Edition!

Sorry for the quickie, friends, but I’ll be back in form next week!

The international trailer for Guillem Morales’s Julia’s Eyes (Los ojos de Julia) is eerie and gorgeous. It’s produced by Guillermo del Toro, and I want to see it. (I’d say that sentence is redundant, but after last week’s Haunted Mansion news, Guillermo is no longer a sure bet.)

Speaking of Guillermo, as I am wont to do, the teaser for his remake of Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark, starring Katie Holmes, is all kinds of hella sweet. Continue reading
