Does Oscar Reward Smaller Budgets?

Posted in Movie News with tags , , , on January 27, 2011 by xymarla

The bigger the budget, the smaller the chance at nabbing an Oscar? If so, tough luck, Inception and Toy Story 3. Check out my post over at Badass Digest for the scoop.

oscar

The Oscar nominations have been announced with lots of fanfare and few surprises.

As you’ve probably heard by now, Oscar snubbee Christopher Nolan has cast Anne Hathaway as Catwoman and Tom Hardy as totally random and inexplicable villain Bane in The Dark Knight Rises. That said, Bane is often wearing tiny wrestling suits that show his rippling muscles to best effect, so I approve of this casting.

wonder-woman

The news keeps changing about this project. NBC has picked up the pilot for David E. Kelley’s (almost definitely) abomination of a Wonder Woman show. If there are any fucking dancing babies on this show, I will use my Lasso of Truth to garrote Kelley’s scrawny little neck.

Beware the new Scream 4 trailer unless you want to know absolutely everything that will happen in the movie, as if you couldn’t figure that out on your own. Also beware the new trailer if you don’t want to die of meta overdose. Check out some new stills at the link.

Of the many Wizard of Oz-adjacent projects on the horizon, the only one other than the Wicked mini-series that I’ve found at all intriguing was the idea of Robert Downey, Jr. playing the Wizard in the prequel Oz, The Great and Terrible. But now RDJ, whom I would have quite liked to see in a quirky fantasy role, has dropped out, to be possibly replaced by Johnny Depp, who plays nothing BUT quirky fantasy roles. Bored now. One of the best comedies on television returns tonight after a torturous eight-month hiatus. If you’ve never seen PARKS AND REC, or you gave it up after the lukewarm first season, here’s what you need to know (over at Badass Digest).

golden globes
Oh right. The totally irrelevant awards show that ignored True Grit and nominated The Tourist and Burlesque—twice each—happened.

x-men first class

I doubt this shit is for real. I genuinely hope it isn’t. But the internets are touting this as the first official pic of the cast from X-Men: First Class.

With the clip at the link, Drive Angry 3D makes no bones about what it is. Even though director Patrick Lussier directed the hated-by-me My Bloody Valentine, I’ll still probably check this out. Continue reading

Netflix Streaming Is The Reason I Hate Outside

Posted in Top List with tags , on January 14, 2011 by xymarla

Oh, Netflix, you sly minx. The company is now catering to the utterly lackadaisical among us by adding a Netflix button to remote controls that operate TVs, blu-ray players and gaming systems offering the instant Netflix streaming service. No longer must we degrade ourselves by pushing, like, three different buttons to get our Netflix fix! Long gone are the dark days of walking to our mailboxes in the tyrannical outdoors. Today, my friends, is our Independence Day!

I’m celebrating this advance in Technology For The Inert And Agoraphobic by cataloguing some of the best that Netflix streaming currently has to offer over at Badass Digest. Check it out!

Apologies! I know all I’ve done on ye olde blogge lately is NDTD and link to my Badass Digest posts, and please trust that I am duly chagrined about that. I’m going to move this baby back to the front burner as soon as I get everything sorted, but thanks for your patience in the meantime. As a token of my gratitude, please enjoy an extra-newsy News Day!Wicked

Amidst the virtual crap storm of Oz movies that are floating around Hollywood these days, the project nearest to my heart is finally coming to life! ABC is developing an adaptation of Gregory Maguire’s novel Wicked–from which the blockbuster musical sprung–in the ideal format for it, a mini-series.

Lots of The Green Hornet news as its release date looms. Go behind the scenes here, gape in amazement at the outrageous budget along with Seth Rogen here, and read a great interview with Rogen here where he gives a tidbit about Seth and Jay vs. The Apocalypse and name-drops The Mist (hell yes!) as its inspiration.

Monsters director Gareth Edwards is going to billionuple his budget by taking on  Godzilla next. Continue reading
