You guys. Holy smokes. YOU HAVE GOT TO START WATCHING THESE DC UNIVERSE MOVIES! They are AMAZING! Lauren Montgomery’s Wonder Woman (2009) is so far definitely my favorite, but that may have something to do with the fact that, being the only true female superhero, Wonder Woman has always been my favorite. Mostly? BECAUSE SHE’S AWESOME.

Like many of you, I long anticipated the Joss Whedon-helmed Wonder Woman live action movie that would presumably melt my face and will almost definitely never happen. Naturally, even the most obscure male superheroes get huge summer blockbuster releases and multiple sequels, but one of the most important comic book superheroes of all time, a woman, can’t get her name up on a single marquee. Superman: Doomsday is the first in a series of DC Universe animated straight-to-video movies that will be released over the next year or so. The series has also released Justice League: The New Frontier, Batman: Gotham Knight, and the most recent Wonder Woman movie which Marla has been so grievously coveting of late (I’ll SHOW you “very long wait,” Netflix!). I’ll be reviewing the entire series in due time.

Who watched the Watchmen this week? I did! And it was awesome!

Alan Moore’s revolutionary 1986-87 comic book, illustrated by Dave Gibbons, has frequently been called unfilmable. Hollywood has tried and failed numerous times throughout the years to capture this outstanding and ingenious work, and Moore’s disgust with previous adaptations of his books (V for Vendetta, League of Extraordinary Gentlemen) induced him to refuse any writing credit for this film and vow he’d never see it. The book’s intricate and labyrinthine structure, fully realized back-stories and breathtaking visual transitions between plots certainly do seem impossible to adapt to the silver screen. But goddammit, Zack Snyder tried, didn’t he? This is a man who loves the source material. He loves it the way we love it. And it shows.
