Another day, another Marla-come-lately review. Since most of you have probably already seen Jaume Balagueró and Paco Plaza’s Spanish film [rec], I won’t take up too much of your time, particularly because I’m going to do a Remake vs. Original with this and the American remake Quarantine next week!

So: [rec]–it’s good, no?

We begin with footage from host Ángela Vidal’s (Manuela Velasco) Insomniacstyle show titled While You Were Asleep. No, not While You Were Sleeping. That’s different. Ángela and her cameraman Pablo (Pablo Rosso) are filming a typical night in a fire station. They’re assigned to travel with appropriately yummy firefighters Manu (Ferran Terraza) and Álex (David Vert). They’re soon called to the scene of an apartment building, not yet understanding what the emergency entails. Ángela, Pablo, Manu and Álex are immediately locked in the apartment building with a police officer, a medical intern, a dozen anxious residents—oh yeah, and some straight up zombies. The surrounding police tell them that everything is under control, but is it?

IS IT?! (no.) Continue reading

Quickie Review: Paranormal Activity

Guys, Paranormal Activity is really good! Why didn’t any of you tell me?!

haha! Okay, just kidding. You totally did tell me. Repeatedly. But I was busy! And now that I’ve finally seen it, I can say with authority—DANG! You weren’t lying!

Paranormal Activity has a beautifully simple premise: Katie and Micah live together and have been experiencing some spooky bumps in the night. They set up a camera and start documenting the events. This straightforward scenario allows for a minimum cast, raw footage, one location, and a budget of—get this: ELEVEN THOUSAND DOLLARS! And it grossed over $100 MILLION! Because it is scary as hell!

Quickie Review: Alice in Wonderland

Posted in Fantasy Movie Review, Film Review, Quickie Review with tags , , , , , , , , on March 8, 2010 by xymarla

I’ve got a full blogging plate this week, but I had to take a moment to recommend Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland to you guys!

I have to admit, after reading many tepid reviews, I was beginning to feel pretty uneasy about this version of Lewis Carroll’s beloved Alice. Screenwriter Linda Woolverton created an entirely new story of the 19-year-old Alice’s return to Wonderland, and that’s an extraordinarily ballsy endeavor. Fortunately, the risk paid off.

Zombieland

Posted in A+ Review, Film Review, Horror Movie Review, Quickie Review with tags , , , , , , , , on February 11, 2010 by xymarla

I’m going to keep this one short, because I was almost certainly the last person in America to see this movie, so you’re probably all, “Duh, Marla! Way to jump on the late train!”

Zombieland is riotous and original, perfectly timed at 88 breathless minutes that are jam-packed with action, superb effects, priceless one-liners and a surprising amount of heart. Jesse Eisenberg plays (of course) the awkward and nerdy Columbus, who is uniquely suited to survive the zombie apocalypse due to his neuroses, paranoia and cowardice. He meets up with Tallahassee, a reckless, Twinkie-obsessed, redneck Woody Harrelson at his very best. I’m not kidding—this movie could have starred ONLY Woody Harrelson and it still would have been my favorite movie ever.
