Borders Line: When A Television Show Defies Our Expectations

Posted in Television Review with tags , , , on June 23, 2011 by xymarla

In the past two weeks, legions of fans have revolted over unexpected developments in Game of Thrones and The Killing. Audiences for both shows are irate over the unforeseen death of an important character in the former and an abrupt cliffhanger in the latter. Hordes of viewers have threatened to stop watching, bloggers (this one included) have written scathing criticisms, and Twitter is rife with the 140-character equivalent of shaking an indignant fist. The smart viewers rail against trite and formulaic TV plots, so why is it that when a popular show defies our expectations, we riot?

Sarah Michelle Gellar is returning to our TV sets, and I’m kind of insanely invested in that fact. Please, oh please, let Ringer be good!

christmas evil

Happy holidays, spooks. My gift to all the good boys and girls is plenty of juicy scoop, straight from their blogs to my blog to you!

cabin in the woods

It’s a Christmas miracle! MGM’s allegedly getting back on its feet, which is good news for the next Bond film, for The Hobbit and oh! oh! For Joss and Drew’s The Cabin in the Woods!

paul

The trailer for Greg Mottola’s Paul, starring the unbeatable duo of Pegg and Frost along with Seth Rogen’s charming voice and every other comedic actor I have ever enjoyed in the past five years, is just totally adorable.

katee sackhoff

In what sounds like a pretty clever conceit, BSG badass Katee Sackhoff will play the title character in Sexy Evil Genius. Could be great, despite the fact that it will be headed by the showrunner on ABC Fam’s Greek, which is probably not a good show.

heather morris

Glee‘s resident delightful dumbass Heather Morris confirms that she’s in talks to play Buffy in the ill-advised remake. I still don’t give a shit about this remake, but that’s not bad casting. Continue reading

Y’all, I totally almost forgot about NDTD today! It’s not like I haven’t been doing this for the past 84 weeks or so. Someone’s got turkey brain! I’m gonna blow through this before I start daydreaming about broccoli cheese rice casserole again.

pride_prejudice_zombies1w

Mike White, who penned School of Rock, has been tapped to direct Pride and Prejudice and Zombies. Having just finished the audiobook of P&P today (for the 400th time, what.), I’m unusually interested in this news despite Natalie Portman’s dropping out. I suppose ScarJo will suffice.

walking dead

Speaking of zombies, we probs have a full year to wait before S2 of The Walking Dead. Check out the full convo of my Walking Dead reviews with Henri and Devin on Badass Digest! Continue reading

Extra! Extra! Fright Night Remake is Sounding Disconcertingly...Decent?!

With a respectable cast of Colin Farrell, Toni Collete and Anton Yelchin, I find myself waving my fist slightly less vigorously at news of the Fright Night remake. This Remake vs. Original is shapin’ up to be a doozy! Thanks to Jerry for the link. (Read my review of the original Fright Night here.)

There’s some seriously rad Tron Legacy concept art at the link!

Comedy Central’s hooking up those of us desperate for some new Futurama scoop with a new Countdown post every weekday until the new premiere on June 24! I actually found myself DISAPPOINTED when I realized that I would be drinking rum punch on a beach in Mexico during the premiere. Sad, Marla. Sad. Continue reading

Extra! Extra! I saw the face-melting Tron Legacy trailer in IMAX 3D!

And you can too, if you watch Alice in Wonderland! Or you can just watch it on your computer screen and only melt your face a little bit. (read my Alice review here.)

Meredith over at io9 broke down the trailer and analyzed each still for us. Do you guys think if I stole her identity, she’d notice?

And she’s got the brand new Iron Man 2 trailer here. May 7th! May 7th!  Continue reading

Recuperation comes in the form of sweet, sweet scoop.

bourne

Marla’s favorite reluctant assassin, Jason Bourne, is having a bit of a struggle coming back to the big screen. Greengrass is out.  Bring in Tony Gilroy! He rocks my socks and he’s already proven he can direct. Hollywood, do not deprive your loyal subjects of Jason Bourne’s glorious shoulders and sexy conscience!
