Favreau says bye-bye to Iron Manchise

Everything about this interview confuses me. Jon Favreau is leaving the Iron Man franchise in order to make a Magic Kingdom family film. And that sounds TERRIBLE. But he has such big ideas and so much passion for the project! Usually when someone uses the phrase “family fare,” I flee in terror, but now Favreau’s making Magic Kingdom, Fincher’s making 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, and Guillermo’s making Haunted Mansion. And I LIKE these directors. I also adore Favreau’s earlier foray into family flicks, Elf, but I’m depressed at the prospect of Iron Man 3 now, when I had such high hopes after Iron Man 2 (reviewed here) for its becoming the trilogy for our generation. Well, at least we have Toy Story.

So…I dunno. I’m all aflutter. Will someone please tell me how to feel about this?

Iron Man 2

Tony Stark is back, bishes! He’s back and refreshingly unchanged as the flawed, hard-partying narcissist with whom we fell in love back in 2008. It’s comforting to realize that in an ever-changing world of chaos and confusion, our Great American Hero remains immutable.

But wait! say you. Superman is the Great American Superhero! I mean, his slogan is “Truth, Justice and the American Way,” for crying out loud! And that’s true, if you’re rather adorably delusional about what it actually means to be an American. Rich, arrogant, bullying, imperious, as red-state as Glenn Beck and a hell of a lot more handsome, Iron Man is about as American as they come. And this bleeding heart blue-stater is mad crushing on him, anyway!

I hope you all were able to enjoy a labor-free Labor Day! Yeah? Now get to work! This News Day Tuesday is serious business!

The Host 2. I’m not sure I’ll see it, but at least it’s not infuriating me like the American remake is.

Sooooo much sequels-and-remakes news in this NDTD; prepare yourself. 30 Days of Night.

Hello, my little scoop-hungry fiends! I’ve got all sorts of goodies for you this week, so let’s hop to, shall we?

twilight

Okay, so I’ve never read nor seen Twilight, and I doubt I will. But this screenplay purports to tell the story of What If Twilight Were Short and Also Made Sense? And that movie? I would watch. Although I probably still wouldn’t read the book.

vampire chronicles

Need further evidence of the pervasive magic emanating off Robert Downey Jr? This news has me actually interested in a new movie with the word “vampire” in the title! GASP!

Straight from their blogs to my blogs to you!

In box office news, The Hangover totally surprised the shit out of everyone and bested UP. Drag Me undeservedly fell to 7, after Terminator in 6th and Star Trek in 5th.

And what a busy Tuesday it is! Therefore, I’ll be keeping it brief this week, folks.

R.I.P.

dark tower

Okay listen. The Dark Tower series is an absolute lifetime obsession of mine, and I have the tattoo to prove it. The only way it can be successfully translated to film is as a mini-series made up of 2 hour episodes aired Monday through Friday over three weeks on HBO, preferably with Viggo Mortensen as Roland, Gina Torres as Susannah and relative unknowns cast as Eddie and Jake. I’ve got it all figured out and have since high school. JJ, you can call me once you’re ready to hear my outline.
