The Dark Tower Series Casting Call (Ka-Tet of 19)

The man in black fled across the desert, and the gunslinger followed.

With those 12 words, my life changed. I have been a passionate follower of The Dark Tower series since I was in junior high, when I wrote Stephen King a letter telling him that the books made me believe in magic, describing my grim little hometown in East Texas, offering him Taco Bell coupons for some damn reason and insisting he just HAD to try the drink Orbitz.

It was the 90s.

A year later, he sent me the publisher’s copy of the newly published Wizard and Glass, inscribed “Dear [Marla], There’s still plenty of magic in the world. Your letter proves it. From a fellow Orbitz junkie, Stephen King. 2/3/98.”

In the following book, Wolves of the Calla, he wrote that Pere Callahan took on a range of odd jobs, including “mucking out horse stalls in Lufkin, Texas.” Yep, that’s the small town I’d described to Mr. King. HE WROTE. MY TOWN. INTO THE SERIES.

I have a small 19 tattooed on my right wrist. I just typed all of the above quotes from memory. I’ve read these books countless times. Believe me when I say: this shit MATTERS to me. So as long as they’ve been discussing an adaptation of The Dark Tower series, I have been terrified. WHAT IF THEY MESS IT UP? How could Hollywood possibly deliver the scope of this breathtaking, sprawling, epic series?

Well, I’ll tell you. Agreeing to develop a movie trilogy and a multi-season television series to be produced simultaneously, thereby revolutionizing entertainment as we know it, is a damned fine start. I’m not sure about Ron Howard–I mean, seriously? Ron Howard? But the man has big plans and this monumental multi-platform format shows a tremendous amount of respect for the source material. I’m just gonna say it. For now…I am THRILLED. Thrilled! However, I reserve the right, if at any point I read news that I find alarming, to revert immediately back to anxious and resentful.

So! Here are my long-touted cast picks! Some of these are new, but most I’ve been emphatically insisting upon for years.

Inception

When I was a child, I had lucid dreams about twice a year. I experienced around a dozen, and in my memory, each dream is still startling in its clarity.  I remember manipulating the boundaries of my dream in order to make myself 2 inches tall, running through a field of skyscraping wildflowers. Once I dreamt myself into a space ship; another time I influenced the dream to make myself a detective like my hero, Hercule Poirot. I flew, I swam, I skated, I spun. I made my mother into a princess and my sister into a boy as the ultimate childhood revenge. My last lucid dream was in fifth grade, when I exploited the process to satisfy my growing boy-craziness by dreaming that all of the cute boys in my school were lined up to compliment and kiss me. I’ve always blamed myself for having used my imaginative powers for something so frivolous as, after that particularly gratifying reverie, I lost the ability to lucid dream. I have dearly missed those lucid dreams, yearning for the experience ever since.

Christopher Nolan recreated it for me.

This will not be a long review. I walked into Inception knowing as little as I possibly could about the film, especially given that I am a fiend for the Internet. I’m glad to have been able to enjoy the movie so virgin-brained, and I am loath to ruin that experience for you. So here’s what you get: Inception is a movie about a dream heist. And that is all you need to know. Continue reading

Extra! Extra! Marla's leaving ALL of you for Joseph Gordon-Levitt!

That’s right! Expect tomorrow’s review of Inception to go something like this: OMG SQUEE MARLA + JGL=TRU LUV 4EVS!!!!!!!!!!!!

In the meantime, le scoope!

The first full cast pic of The Walking Dead is so damned awesome, I can scarcely stand it. You can read the lineup of writers and directors for each episode at the link. Frank Darabont will have lots more involvement than previously suspected, thank goodness. (Read my review of Darabont’s The Mist here.)

Longtime showrunner Eric Kripke (who’s stepping down next year, although staying on as Executive Producer) teases what’s next for Supernatural‘s sixth season. (Read my review of Supernatural here.)

You can see Ryan Reynolds in his computer-generated Green Lantern suit here. Why CGI? In order to show off all the glowy energy Green Lantern emanates. Still, kinda dumb.  Continue reading

Extra! Extra! Insert Clever Headline Here!

Hello all! Thanks to the delightful Reverend Jon for subbing last week. Let’s get to it!

Movie titles keep getting dumber and dumber, to my infinite delight. 5nal Destination is going to rock my gleefully mocking/secretly enjoying ass off!

The international trailer for Let Me In looks like the shit just shit. Even Hit Girl can’t save this one! Check out the original,  folks (titled Let the Right One In, from Norway). It’s easily accessible from your friendly neighborhood Netflix account. Continue reading

Today is simply rife with news that I thought I’d never care about again and yet cannot seem to keep myself from reporting repeating!

Extra! Extra! A new vampire movie actually sounds interesting to me!

But before that…the SAG awards happened, apparently.

So…Alex Proyas (The Crow, Dark City) is attached to direct a Dracula: Year Zero flick about The Count’s transformation from Vlad the Impaler to Dracula. And Marla’s boyfriend Sam Worthington’s name is being bandied about! And all of a sudden I’m interested in vampires again! And then I remembered that I’m super pumped to watch Chan-wook Park’s sorta-vampire flick Thirst this week, and my life got all twisty-turny. Every time I think I’m out, they suck me back in.
