Extra! Extra! Burglars rot in hell for all eternity!

Due to the fact that I was totes burgled yesterday, I’m reserving the right to spend my lunch break reading a good book and eating pizza instead of blogging as I usually do. Here are two items in the meantime!

the avengers

Joss talks about the cancellation of Dollhouse, his kick-ass Astonishing X-Men comics series and his rewarding foray into filming The Avengers!

Extra! Extra! Marla's face to melt in tragic explosion of awesomeness tonight!

YES! That’s right! I’m seeing Piranha 3D this very evening and I’m CRAZY! EXCITED! Reviews are crazy good, box office numbers are decent and a sequel’s already in the works!

x-men first classJanuary Jones

Loads of casting news for Matthew Vaughn’s X-Men: First Class here, including the news that Mad Men‘s January Jones will play the ultimate ice queen and forever Marla girl crush Emma Frost. Jones certainly has the right look, but I’m not convinced she can actually act. Maybe there’s more than petulant Betty to Jones’s repertoire. I hope so, because I REALLY don’t want this movie to screw up Emma Frost. Read my review of Vaughn’s Kick-Ass here.

Extra! Extra! Moody chick from new Nightmare pulls casting coup of the century!

Yep, despite the terrifying rumor that Scarlett Johansson would be the outrageously inappropriate choice for Lisbeth Salander in the American remake of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, the far more fitting-in-appearance Rooney Mara has nabbed the covetous role. Although I was rather underwhelmed with her performance in the recent update of Nightmare on Elm Street, I’m willing to suspend judgment. For now.

smallville

I’ve just posted LOADS of Smallville S10 scoop to Watchtower including news on some very exciting return characters!

the avengers

Joss Whedon gives a very newsy interview about what to expect from The Avengers! The answer: amazingness, obviously!

We'll miss you, Harvey.

Welcome back to News Day Tuesday, where you might find my reporting to be rather lackadaisical because I’m so sad about Harvey Pekar.  Also: I’m lazy.

The 2010 Comic Con schedule is up! Go here to make yourself physically sick with envy, just like me!

I’m not sure how I feel about this All About Evil trailer. Perhaps…warmly? Continue reading

Extra! Extra! Fright Night Remake is Sounding Disconcertingly...Decent?!

With a respectable cast of Colin Farrell, Toni Collete and Anton Yelchin, I find myself waving my fist slightly less vigorously at news of the Fright Night remake. This Remake vs. Original is shapin’ up to be a doozy! Thanks to Jerry for the link. (Read my review of the original Fright Night here.)

There’s some seriously rad Tron Legacy concept art at the link!

Comedy Central’s hooking up those of us desperate for some new Futurama scoop with a new Countdown post every weekday until the new premiere on June 24! I actually found myself DISAPPOINTED when I realized that I would be drinking rum punch on a beach in Mexico during the premiere. Sad, Marla. Sad. Continue reading

David Cronenberg Retrospective: The Dead Zone

Posted in Film Review, Horror Movie Review, Retrospective, Retrospective: David Cronenberg with tags , , , , , , on April 14, 2010 by xymarla

David Cronenberg’s adaptation of Stephen King’s novel The Dead Zone is so straightforward, I found myself forgetting that it was a Cronenberg joint. Throughout my viewing, I was all, “But wait! Where are the rage tumors? I haven’t seen any brain sucking yet! Are you seriously telling me that there are NO bloody VCR stomachs in this movie?”

Of course, The Dead Zone is about clairvoyance and telepathy, causality and fate—hardly mainstream themes—but there are very few gory manual effects, which just seems wrong in a Cronenberg movie. I want more ‘splodey heads! And ‘splodey eyeballs! And ‘splodey torsoes! It’s okay to want that, right?

That being said, The Dead Zone is a seriously good movie, as well as a solid adaptation of the source material. In addition to being a Cronenberg fan, I’m also a fervent Stephen King fan, so it’s a little wacky that I’d never seen this movie before my recent viewing. Plus! It stars Christopher Walken! At his gravest and least caricatured self! Continue reading
