David Cronenberg Retrospective: The Dead Zone

David Cronenberg’s adaptation of Stephen King’s novel The Dead Zone is so straightforward, I found myself forgetting that it was a Cronenberg joint. Throughout my viewing, I was all, “But wait! Where are the rage tumors? I haven’t seen any brain sucking yet! Are you seriously telling me that there are NO bloody VCR stomachs in this movie?”

Of course, The Dead Zone is about clairvoyance and telepathy, causality and fate—hardly mainstream themes—but there are very few gory manual effects, which just seems wrong in a Cronenberg movie. I want more ‘splodey heads! And ‘splodey eyeballs! And ‘splodey torsoes! It’s okay to want that, right?

That being said, The Dead Zone is a seriously good movie, as well as a solid adaptation of the source material. In addition to being a Cronenberg fan, I’m also a fervent Stephen King fan, so it’s a little wacky that I’d never seen this movie before my recent viewing. Plus! It stars Christopher Walken! At his gravest and least caricatured self! Continue reading

Extra! Extra! My Dead Zone review FINALLY goes up tomorrow!

Yep, you heard me right, ladies and gents. DIH is back to being a real blog! With actual reviews! OF MOVIES! A hearty thanks to the dashing Jerry for subbing last week. Now on to the scoop.

twinpeaks

In honor of the 20-year anniversary of my all-time favorite show, NPR has a wonderful essay on the incomparably off-beat Twin Peaks. io9 asks: “Will there ever be another Twin Peaks?”  Uhm, obviously no. Unless David Lynch makes it. Speaking of His Strangeness, check out Lynch’s eloquently random Twitter feed. And Laura Harring teases…a sequel to Mulholland Drive?! How would that even work? Look for my post on the lasting effects of Twin Peaks later this week.

Glee

And in honor of my new favorite show’s return after a painful four-month hiatus, Vulture presents a slideshow of nerdy clique representations on the big and little screen. Freaks and Geeks represent! But dude, where’s Chloe? She should at least be alongside Andrea Zuckerman when it comes to nerdy and obsessive high school editors. Come to think of it, so should Marla. Continue reading

Extra! Extra! I saw the face-melting Tron Legacy trailer in IMAX 3D!

And you can too, if you watch Alice in Wonderland! Or you can just watch it on your computer screen and only melt your face a little bit. (read my Alice review here.)

Meredith over at io9 broke down the trailer and analyzed each still for us. Do you guys think if I stole her identity, she’d notice?

And she’s got the brand new Iron Man 2 trailer here. May 7th! May 7th!  Continue reading

Extra! Extra! Looks like I'm the one who has some words to eat!

Yes, despite my taunting of Eric Kripke last week,  he actually is sticking with his original plan of ditching Supernatural after five seasons. Next season will bring a new arc and a new showrunner! Not sure how I feel about this; I may just pretend the series ends with this year’s finale.

Supernatural‘s Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Sam Worthington will star in a movie about League City’s I-45 “killing fields,” where as many as 70 bodies have turned up over the years.

Juan Carlos Fresnadillo, director of the excellent 28 Weeks Later, has a new film out called The Intruders, a fright flick centered around an 11-yr-old girl. No more details yet, but I’m excited!

The new international Tron Legacy poster is out and awesome. Continue reading
