As you’ve likely heard by now, Adrianne Palicki is David E. Kelley’s new Wonder Woman. Solid casting. Pity she’ll be wasted on such a suck of a show. Linda Carter supports the new show, for whatever that is worth.

Mila Kunis is out for the Hughes Bros.’ live action Akira and in for Sam Raimi’s Oz, The Great and Powerful along with James Franco (replacing Robert Downey, Jr.) in the titular role. Kunis will play the Wicked Witch of the West in her younger, fairer years. Raimi, Franco and Kunis make an appealing team, particularly when paired with the great writer David Lindsay-Abaire. I’m in. (Read my review of Raimi’s Drag Me to Hell here.)

ironman

As desperately hoped for last week, Shane Black is confirmed to direct Iron Man 3. Hells to the yes!

As desperately dreaded last week, DJ Caruso will be directing the Preacher adaptation. This is going to be devastatingly shitty, y’all. Continue reading

oscar

The Oscar nominations have been announced with lots of fanfare and few surprises.

As you’ve probably heard by now, Oscar snubbee Christopher Nolan has cast Anne Hathaway as Catwoman and Tom Hardy as totally random and inexplicable villain Bane in The Dark Knight Rises. That said, Bane is often wearing tiny wrestling suits that show his rippling muscles to best effect, so I approve of this casting.

The news keeps changing about this project. NBC has picked up the pilot for David E. Kelley’s (almost definitely) abomination of a Wonder Woman show. If there are any fucking dancing babies on this show, I will use my Lasso of Truth to garrote Kelley’s scrawny little neck.

Beware the new Scream 4 trailer unless you want to know absolutely everything that will happen in the movie, as if you couldn’t figure that out on your own. Also beware the new trailer if you don’t want to die of meta overdose. Check out some new stills at the link.

Of the many Wizard of Oz-adjacent projects on the horizon, the only one other than the Wicked mini-series that I’ve found at all intriguing was the idea of Robert Downey, Jr. playing the Wizard in the prequel Oz, The Great and Terrible. But now RDJ, whom I would have quite liked to see in a quirky fantasy role, has dropped out, to be possibly replaced by Johnny Depp, who plays nothing BUT quirky fantasy roles. Bored now. Extra! Extra! Wonder Woman is getting the shaft again!

Ugh. So although Hollywood will spit out a dozen movies a year with random, no-big-deal MALE comic book characters, one of the greatest superheroes of all time who happens to be a woman can’t get one single damned feature film. The long-touted Wonder Woman movie is now a television show. Oh AND?! It’s being written/produced by the abysmal David E. Kelley (Ally McBeal). THIS IS BULLSHIT.

Some scoop from the set of X-Men: First Class, being shot at Oxford currently.

And we’ve got some news from NYCC regarding the Deadpool movie and which other Marvel characters we can expect to see, including…Colossus! The coolest X-Man ever! Obvs Ryan Reynolds will not reprise his role as Wade Wilson/Deadpool from X-Men Origins: Wolverine because he’s got bigger, greener, lanternier fish to fry.

wolverine

Speaking of our least favorite comic book movie of all time, serious-business director Darren Aronofsky is considering following the immense critical success of Black Swan with a sequel to X-Men Origins: Wolverine? Yes, okay, that sounds reasonable utterly insane and made up. (Read my review of Wolverine here.) Continue reading

Wonder Woman

You guys. Holy smokes. YOU HAVE GOT TO START WATCHING THESE DC UNIVERSE MOVIES! They are AMAZING! Lauren Montgomery’s Wonder Woman (2009) is so far definitely my favorite, but that may have something to do with the fact that, being the only true female superhero, Wonder Woman has always been my favorite. Mostly? BECAUSE SHE’S AWESOME.

ww badas by you.

Like many of you, I long anticipated the Joss Whedon-helmed Wonder Woman live action movie that would presumably melt my face and will almost definitely never happen. Naturally, even the most obscure male superheroes get huge summer blockbuster releases and multiple sequels, but one of the most important comic book superheroes of all time, a woman, can’t get her name up on a single marquee. Still and all, this itty bitty hour-plus cartoon makes for quite a satisfying substitution, let me tell you. It’s fantastic!

Justice League: The New Frontier

Wow. This Movie! Is So! Awesome!!!

justice league poster by you.

Okay, so! Justice League: The New Frontier is based on the comic book series DC: The New Frontier by Darwyn Cooke, who served as story and visual consultant here. AND IT’S SO GOOD! It’s spirited and gritty and fierce and funny and just utterly delicious. It’s got about a hundred different storylines so I’m going to try to be as brief as possible with the recapping before getting to the awesome. Which, granted, is everything.
