Michelle Pfeiffer is in talks to reunite with her Batman Returns director Tim Burton, possibly joining Johnny Depp, Eva Green and Jackie Earle Haley for Dark Shadows. You can read a interview here with Barnabas Depp about the film.

The plot summary for the upcoming Wrong Turn 4 sounds nothing like a Wrong Turn movie. Whatever.

In news that surprises no one, Ridley Scott’s Alien prequels have been pushed back for the umpteenth time.

You can see here two teaser one-sheets for Kevin Smith’s Red State, a horror movie that I am inexplicably excited to see. Seriously, why? I cannot answer that question. Maybe it’ll be awesome.

Now I can definitely get behind THIS project. Guillermo del Toro, the busiest man in the biz, has just confirmed that he’s moving forward with his Lovecraft adaptation, the epically titled At the Mountains of Madness. With James Cameron, somehow.

It’s News Day Tuesday!

Y’all, I totally almost forgot about NDTD today! It’s not like I haven’t been doing this for the past 84 weeks or so. Someone’s got turkey brain! I’m gonna blow through this before I start daydreaming about broccoli cheese rice casserole again.

Mike White, who penned School of Rock, has been tapped to direct Pride and Prejudice and Zombies. Having just finished the audiobook of P&P today (for the 400th time, what.), I’m unusually interested in this news despite Natalie Portman’s dropping out. I suppose ScarJo will suffice.

Review of The Walking Dead episode 1.02 “Guts”

The Walking Dead‘s second episode of the 6-episode season is titled “Guts,” and let me tell you, on that score, the ep does not disappoint. As far as gore, kick-ass action and a few moments of breath-holding suspense, “Guts” is a perfect episode. However, as I said last week, The Walking Dead is *supposed* to be about believable characters making relatable decisions. While I understand and appreciate Darabont’s choice to introduce new characters who aren’t in the comic book to the universe, homeboy’s going to have to try a little harder than Merle Dixon (Michael Rooker) and T-Dog (IronE Singleton).

Allow me to repeat: new characters MERLE DIXON and T-DOG are in this supposedly racially charged episode. ughh.

Walking Dead pilot

Hey there zombs! Sorry I missed yesterday’s News Day Tuesday—I have been struck by THE PLAGUE (or possibly the common cold) and I have felt far too puny to be my usual chipper blogging self. I promise to make next Tuesday extra-newsy for you!

Who watched The Walking Dead pilot live Halloween night? How exciting was that?! We had a small spooky party and a group of 10-or-so people cozied up in my tiny living room to watch the mayhem unspool—commericals and all!—on my big, pretty TV. And jeezy chreezy, am I glad I have such a nice HD television, because The Walking Dead is, if nothing else, GORE-geous. The stark lighting and bleak landscapes make stunning supplements to the not-insignificant blood splatter.

Just PRETTY, you know? (pretty scary!) I’ve been waiting breathlessly for this show to premiere since it was first announced. Robert Kirkman’s comic is elegantly told, structured around the depths to which society can plunge when, well, there is no more society. The Walking Dead is not a horror comic, although there are certainly horrific elements in spades. Rather, Walking Dead strives to tell a sprawling character-driven epic, delving into how such havoc and devastation can deeply change a person. Even a good, strong, God-fearing person. Sometimes ESPECIALLY that person. The Walking Dead is a marathon, not a sprint, and Frank Darabont’s adaptation gives every sign of being in it for the long haul. The 90-minute pilot ends approximately 40 pages into the first issue of the so-far 13 volume series. There is a LOT of story left to tell, and after watching the pilot, I am convinced that Darabont is the man to do it.
