I Am A Rational Adult Who Loves Smallville

Posted in Television Review with tags , , , , on May 12, 2011 by xymarla

Tomorrow, the two-hour series finale of Smallville will air, a culmination of ten years of triumphs and missteps in a show that I cannot help but love. Loving this show with my unceasing critical eye has not been an easy journey; Smallville has never made it easy.  But it’s a journey I’ve cherished, and so, on the eve of its finale, I defend Smallville in the face of astonishment and contempt. Read it over at Badass Digest.

Yummy, sufficiently square-jawed British actor Henry Cavill has been cast as Zack Snyder’s Superman in the upcoming flick produced by Christopher Nolan. Cavill previously represented the hottest part of The Tudors as Charles Brandon. Hollywood can rest easy: I approve.

Now that The Dark Tower series adaptation is allegedly taking off, Hollywood is turning its eye to another epic Stephen King property, The Stand.  Warner Bros. are planning to adapt the film onto the big screen, unlike the lovably shitty 90s mini-series. This will need to be made into at least two movies, I believe.

roland

In related news, Javier Bardem has officially been offered the part of Roland in The Dark Tower series. Bardem’s a fiercely talented, duly craggy actor, so I’m pleased. I’d be pleased-er if Bardem turned down the role and then it went to Viggo, but we can’t get everything we want, can we? Check out my Dark Tower casting call: Round One (the main ka-tet), Round Two (the allies) and Round Three (the villains). You can also read my thorough predictions for the upcoming adaptation here.

Bardem has also been offered the villain’s role in the latest Bond film, should MGM get its shit together and that movie ever actually happens. Bardem was also recently nominated for an Oscar and just had a baby with the brain-searingly hot Penelope Cruz, so he’s officially having the Best Week Ever. Continue reading

alien

In news that surprises no one, Ridley Scott’s Alien prequels have been pushed back for the umpteenth time.

You can see here two teaser one-sheets for Kevin Smith’s Red State, a horror movie that I am inexplicably excited to see. Seriously, why? I cannot answer that question. Maybe it’ll be awesome.

Now I can definitely get behind THIS project. Guillermo del Toro, the busiest man in the biz, has just confirmed that he’s moving forward with his Lovecraft adaptation, the epically titled At the Mountains of Madness. With James Cameron, somehow. Continue reading

star wars

Extra! Extra! George Lucas has found a way to milk even more money from our childhoods! ALL SIX Star Wars movies will be re-released to theaters in 3D. Lordy.

superman

Zack Snyder has been chosen as the director for the Superman reboot by producer Christopher Nolan. The movie will be written by David Goyer. Solid choice, guys. To no one’s surprise, Brandon Routh is probably not being asked to return as the title hero in tights.

the hobbit

Also Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit will be released in 3D. Obvs.

spiderman

Philip Seymour Hoffman’s name is being bandied about as Venom in the Spider-Man reboot, probably just to get skeptics like myself to be interested in it. Well played, bishes. Continue reading

Extra! Extra! Marla's headed to Fantastic Fest!

And I’m SO! EXCITED! about it!

gandalf and magneto

Sir Ian McKellen continues to win my heart, again, some more, by attending the gay rights anti-pope rally wearing an insanely bad-ass custom version of the official “Some people are gay. Get over it.” shirt.

superman

Guillermo del Toro has turned down an offer to direct the Superman reboot. I think I’m disappointed about that, but possibly relieved. It’s confusing up in here!

red state

Oh yeah! The utterly delightful John Goodman has joined the cast of Kevin Smith’s horror flick Red State, thereby increasing my interest significantly. Continue reading

Smallville Season Finale Scoop!

(Like this post? Check out my other blog Watchtower, your information home base for all things Smallville!)

Holla! Tonight’s the night, my friends! The Season 9 finale for Smallville! This has been a solid season (okay, the Kandorians plot is hella boring. But it’s almost over! Rao willing.) and I’m psyched for what’s sure to be a stellar finale. How do I know?  Because it’s Smallville, suckas! EVERY finale is awesome. EVERY ONE. Even the crappy seasons! All the finales rule except, conversely, Season 8’s, which was in every other respect Smallville’s best season. That was…weird.

But! Season 9! Finale! Sure to be awesome! Here’s some scoop to wet your whistle. Continue reading
