Borders Line: What’s The Next Big Thing?

Posted in Random Tidbits with tags , , on July 21, 2011 by xymarla

After watching Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2, my friends and I engaged in a discussion regarding what the next massively popular film franchise will be. Captain America should do some solid box office and is a blast by all accounts, and it’s possible that The Avengers could melt our collective faces, but the superhero pool is too crowded and mediocre for any one franchise to carry the day. Twilight is ending. Saw is done. Although I’m certain both parts will be blockbusters, The Hobbit is the last bit of juice we can squeeze from the Lord of the Rings franchise. Someone needs to pull an Old Yeller on Pirates of the Caribbean and emancipate us from Jerry Bruckheimer’s greedy death talons. The Hunger Games has employed inexplicable casting (Lennie Kravitz?!) and the books rapidly decrease in quality after a terrific start, so I can’t imagine it will ignite the public lexicon the way its YA counterparts have.  And everyone always seems to forget that the Narnia movies exist.

Borders Line: Saying Goodbye To HARRY POTTER

Posted in Random Tidbits with tags , , , , , , on July 18, 2011 by xymarla

I’m trying to cope with the idea that in three days, I will no longer be able to anticipate a new piece of Harry Potter fiction. This world and these wonderful characters have been an important part of me throughout my entire adult life. Even though I was seven years older than Harry, Hermione and Ron when I first met them, I feel that I’ve grown with them, learned things about myself through their discoveries, related my own heartbreak to tragedies they suffered. They lost loved ones and so did I. They disappointed themselves and so did I. They fell in love and so did I.

It’s your favorite babysitter, Reverend Jon! Speaking of babysitters, REMAKE NEWS! Can’t find where I first read about it, but a remake of your favorite Christina Applegate movie is in the works as they say in the industry.

Pajiba reports that the remake is still in the early stages and no names are attached yet. Any picks for a Christina Applegate update? Taylor Momsen? Continue reading

Extra! Extra! Oz Oz Oz Oz Oz YAWN.

Lord, are there a lot of Wizard of Oz projects on the horizon! And yet none of them is a faithful adaptation of the book (not the musical!) Wicked. le sigh.

The funny thing is, I kind of love all the names attached. Glee’s Lea Michele is set to star in an adaptation also featuring Dan Akroyd, Martin Short, Jim Belushi, Hugh Dancy, Patrick Stewart and Oliver Platt (?!) in a movie musical. Uhm but Bryan Adams is doing the music. wtf? And the OTHER adaptation is a prequel titled Oz, The Great and Powerful directed by SAM RAIMI and starring ROBERT DOWNEY, JR.! Still, yawn. (read my review of Raimi’s Drag Me to Hell here.)

Michael Bay shocks the hell out of me by admitting that he is human and makes mistakes. The next Transformers is to include less wacky “comedy,” fewer racist robot stereotypes (none, dare we hope?) and not nearly so many endings. And of course, no Megan Fox. (read my write-up of megalomaniac Bay here.)   Continue reading

I haven’t yet seen Hot Tub Time Machine, but obviously it’s already my favorite film of 2010. So the news that director Steve Pink is grabbing the genre reins to bring us Werewolves of Reseda, described as “Teen Wolf meets The Hangover” sounds, well, probably terrible but possibly awesome!

So many new, exciting details are being revealed about the Wizarding World of Harry Potter! Pics. A description of the world’s most mind-blowingly magnificent ride. JK’s involvement. The portraits! Dumbledore’s office! Honeydukes! GEEKGASM ALERT.  Continue reading

Extra! Extra! Looks like I'm the one who has some words to eat!

Yes, despite my taunting of Eric Kripke last week,  he actually is sticking with his original plan of ditching Supernatural after five seasons. Next season will bring a new arc and a new showrunner! Not sure how I feel about this; I may just pretend the series ends with this year’s finale.

Supernatural‘s Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Sam Worthington will star in a movie about League City’s I-45 “killing fields,” where as many as 70 bodies have turned up over the years.

Juan Carlos Fresnadillo, director of the excellent 28 Weeks Later, has a new film out called The Intruders, a fright flick centered around an 11-yr-old girl. No more details yet, but I’m excited!

The new international Tron Legacy poster is out and awesome. Continue reading
